Chapter 11
With everything that they had been through and seen in FlipSide together, Axel was still impressed to see how dedicated Lexa was to the Linker cause. She seemingly had lost everything but still kept the will to keep going at all times. Hearing about what happened to her parents would make him think twice about what he said going forward. She had a right to be overly serious when it mattered. Still though, the whole idea of it all made him think about his time back home. What if I had run into her parents multiple times and didnât even know it? His thoughts turned dark as he thought of the possibility of Lexa being wrong about what had happened to them. Maybe Donwin did end up capturing them and executing them without saying a word to anyone. Or maybe he had them in a cell locked somewhere deep within FlipSide in a place that no Linker had ever even heard of. Both scenarios seem like things that he would be completely capable of.
The area of FlipSide that they were in now seemed completely unlike the rest of the city that he had seen. There were no longer shops or restaurants, but massive buildings that didnât have any sort of logo or store name on them. It took Axel a moment to realize that all these buildings were actually houses. Each one of them that they passed seemed to get bigger than the last. Axel and his friends used to go on Google Maps and look at some of the massive houses in suburbs around them, but even those seemed like tiny shacks to what was surrounding them now. Despite the wide-open area, Axel couldnât see anyone in sight. All of the houses gave off a glow of all different colors; some cyan, some pink, and a few orange glows. The same neon-like effect that Axel had seen in the downtown of FlipSide. At the thought of the downtown, he turned his head back around briefly to see the looming glowing skyscrapers of FlipSideâs downtown. The big blue aura of the city seemed to draw his eyes in like a moth. Even though none of this place truly felt like home, he did feel a lot more comfortable when he was surrounded by the big city feel.
While he was distracted by the city, Lexa had stopped in front of him, which caused him to bump right into her back. Before he could say anything, Lexa held her hand in the air like a fist to signal for him to stop. She pointed ahead at the house that was farthest down the block at the end of the cul-de-sac. It was the only house that seemed to have the lights on, but the windows were filled with lights unlike anything that Axel had ever seen. They emitted a glow bright enough to make his eyes squint and the lights were way cooler than the regular LED light strips that him and his friends would have for any of their small apartment parties.
